The word Vinišće comes from old Croatian word for vineyard, what shows that in the past this area has been planted in vineyards. In the Mid-ages territory of today’s parish was owned by Bishop of Trogir and therefore called Biskupija (Bishop’s territory). Several small villages were inhabited by peasants working on the Bishop’s land. West part of Parrish was called Opatija (Abbey) by the Benedictine monastery that owned this part of the land.
It is mentioned in the documents 1272, even though the accurate date of building out has not been thoroughly explored and there are some evidence that it was inhabited in Illiric and Roman time.
The oldest known church in Vinišće is St. Johns church built in 1331. Vinišće is the birth place of Ioannes Stephani Duknovich de Tragurio better know as Ioannes Dalmata world known sculptor.
